What is considered a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is when a patient has an issue that requires our immediate attention. Patients may have signs or symptoms that may indicate they have an emergency. If dental emergencies are not treated promptly, additional complications could occur. If you think you have a dental emergency please call our office right away, and we will get you in to be seen as soon as possible. Common dental emergencies include saving a tooth, alleviating pain, or treating an infection.
Signs of dental emergencies:
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
- Bleeding or irritated gums
- Abscess or infection
- Mouth or lip sores that will not go away
- Spots on your teeth or teeth that you notice are changing color
- Tooth pain that is persistent and will not go away
- Loose or injured teeth
At Bemis Family Dental we handle emergencies with care. Our staff will evaluate the issue, and focus on relieving any pain the patient is experiencing. If a tooth is damaged, our priority is to do everything we can to save the tooth. We treat infections very seriously, and they are handled immediately, so the patient can return to the comfort of their own home. Patients may have to return to our office for further treatment depending on the severity of the emergency.
What to expect with recovery after a dental emergency:
In some cases, patients may have pain during the recovery from their dental emergency. Medication may be prescribed, or over the counter pain relief medication may be recommended. This will help alleviate any pain as the patient heals at home. Pain during recovery should subside after a few days.
