What is a dental filling?
Dental fillings are used to restore a tooth that has been damaged by decay. The filling seals off the affected area and keeps the bacteria out preventing the tooth from further decay. There are different types of fillings available, and depending on the severity of the cavity, we will determine which type is best.
Today most patients want their fillings to blend in with their natural teeth. Composite fillings tend to be more widely used and popular for patients in need of a cavity filling, because they are durable and are the color of our natural teeth.
Types of Fillings:
Composite Fillings: Composite fillings are made out of a resin material and are tooth-colored. Typically composite fillings are used for smaller cavities and blend in nicely in the mouth.
Porcelain Fillings: Porcelain fillings are custom made outside of the mouth using a process referred to as milling. Once the filling is ready, it is cemented on to the tooth. Porcelain fillings are durable, and can last longer compared to other types of fillings.
Amalgam Fillings: Amalgam fillings are also known as metal fillings. This type of filling is durable and is a more inexpensive option compared to others. They are silver in color, and are more noticeable in the mouth.
What to expect during a filling procedure:
During the procedure local anesthesia is used to numb the area and keep the patient comfortable. We clean away the decay inside the cavity, and then fill the area sealing out bacteria. The filling is molded to match the shape of the surrounding tooth. The tooth’s functionality is restored immediately.
