What is an inlay or onlay?
Porcelain inlays and onlays are typically used when the tooth does not have enough damage present to require a crown, or have enough structure left for a filling. We use inlays and onlays to treat moderate levels of damage or decay. Inlays and onlays are tooth colored, and help to correct damage while blending in with our natural teeth.
Porcelain inlays and onlays are custom made, and help to restore and strengthen a damaged tooth to its normal function. Inlays and onlays can be used to cover a smaller area on a molar, or even larger parts of a tooth.
What does an inlay or onlay procedure involve?
Inlays and onlays require two appointments. During the first appointment we prepare the damaged tooth and impressions are taken. The impression is sent out to a lab to create the custom inlay or onlay. Temporary inlays or onlays can be used until the permanent one is ready.
The patient returns for a second appointment to remove the temporary inlay or onlay, and the permanent inlay/onlay is cemented onto the tooth. Proper adjustments are made to ensure the inlay or onlay has the perfect fit, and the patient has the proper bite. We want to ensure the inlay or onlay feels comfortable in the mouth.
Benefits of Inlays/Onlays:
- Inlays and Onlays can be used in place of crowns
- Provide a strong structure for a damaged tooth
- Inlays and Onlays are made of a porcelain material that is the same color as your natural teeth.
