The basics

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in your jawbone, where it acts as a new tooth root. As it heals, the bone fuses to the post (this is called osseointegration), so the implant becomes a permanent part of your smile. Once it's secure, it holds a crown, a bridge, or even a full denture.

Each implant has three parts

  • The implant post, a titanium root placed in the jawbone
  • The abutment, which connects the post to your new tooth
  • The crown or prosthetic, custom-made to match your natural teeth

Implants can replace one tooth, several teeth with an implant bridge, or a whole arch with implant-supported full and partial dentures.

Step by step

Your dental implant process at Bemis Family Dental

Every implant starts with careful planning. We use iTero digital impressions instead of messy molds, so your implant and new tooth fit precisely.

  1. Consultation

Dr. Bemis checks your oral health, bone density, and whether implants are right for you.

  2. Treatment plan

If you're a good candidate, we map out a personal plan and timeline with you.

  3. Implant placement

The implant is placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia, then left to heal.

  4. Abutment

Once the bone has fused with the implant, the connector piece is attached.

  5. Your new tooth

A lifelike crown, bridge, or denture is attached to complete your smile.

Candidacy

Are dental implants right for you?

Most adults in good general and oral health are candidates for implants. Some conditions need extra planning first:

  • Bone loss in the jaw
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Tobacco use
  • Periodontal (gum) disease

If needed, we can talk through bone grafting or a deep cleaning with scaling and root planing before your implant.

How long do implants last?

With consistent home care and regular cleanings, implants can last 15 years or longer, and often a lifetime.

Questions

Dental implant FAQs

How painful is the dental implant procedure?

The procedure itself is not painful. We use local anesthesia during placement, and most patients say the soreness afterward feels like having a tooth pulled. Mild swelling and soreness are common and are usually managed with over-the-counter medicine.

What if I don't have enough bone for an implant?

If your jawbone isn't dense enough, Dr. Bemis may recommend bone grafting before the implant is placed. A graft builds a strong foundation so the implant lasts.

Can implants replace more than one tooth?

Yes. Several implants can support a bridge or dentures. A full arch of teeth can often be held by just four to six implants.

Are dental implants covered by insurance?

It depends on your plan. Some dental insurance plans cover part of the implant or the crown on top. We welcome all PPO plans, check your benefits for you, and can preauthorize treatment. Members of our in-house plan save 20% on implants, and CareCredit lets you pay over time.

How soon can I go back to work?

Most patients return to work the next day. If your job is physically demanding, Dr. Bemis may suggest a few days of rest.

How long do dental implants last?

With good brushing, flossing, and regular checkups, implants can last 15 years or longer, and often a lifetime.
